Here are the steps for preparing a resume and getting ready for the job search:
1. Determine the type of job that you want. Consider your criteria for the job (environment, location, etc.)
2. Draft and refine your clearly-stated one-sentence objective. It must be specific.
3. Make a list of special skills or talents that you have that relate to your objective.
4. Make a list of potential references. Secure two. These will be people whom you have worked with or for in the last five years.
5. Make a list of accomplishments from your last five years of jobs.
7. Draft your resume (using * power words to boost effectiveness) and edit to one page.
8. Draft a one-page cover letter that includes soft items that you cannot use on your resume (such as professional association leadership or specific reasons why you'd be a perfect candidate.)
9. Print resume on good paper.
10. Personalize cover letter and print on same paper as resume.
11. Dress to impress and hand deliver your marketing package whenever possible.
12. Conduct your own ideal e-mail campaign to generate job leads. (Note: This isn't just a mass e-mail to your address book asking for leads -- this is a specifically orchestrated task that is designed to produce results.)
